Prof. Sarah Eaton

Sarah Eaton is Professor of Modern Chinese Society and Economy in the Institute for Sociology and the East Asian Studies Department at the University of Göttingen. She is concurrently Director of Göttingen’s Centre for Modern East Asian Studies (CeMEAS). Before coming to Göttingen, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies and, prior to that, an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo.

Trained as a political scientist, Eaton’s primary research interests are in contemporary China’s political economy and environmental politics. The results of a project on industrial policy and state enterprise in China were published as The Advance of the State in Contemporary China (Cambridge UP, 2016). In addition to other publications on Chinese industrial policy, she has also written about environmental politics in China. Her work has appeared in leading area studies and disciplinary journals including The China Quarterly, The China Journal and Review of International Political Economy.
